Reference design released for Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade in Brisbane

Brisbane City Council this week released the reference design for the major upgrade of one of Brisbane’s busiest road corridors, Kingsford Smith Drive, between Theodore Street and Breakfast Creek Road.

As part of the project, which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety, Kingsford Smith Drive will be widened from four to six lanes and new active and public transport infrastructure will be installed, such as bicycle lanes and widened footpaths.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the reference design includes a major change to the design of the upgraded intersection of Cooksley Street and Kingsford Smith Drive in response to strong feedback during the community consultation period last year.

“In response to extensive feedback from residents, Council has incorporated changes to the design to retain Cooksley Street as a signalised all-movement intersection, which will allow residents easy access to the Inner City Bypass and the CBD,” Cr Quirk said.

Cr Quirk said the reference design also includes changes to the realignment at Cameron Rocks Reserve in order to reduce the impact on the site and allow for much of the existing vegetation and green space to be retained.

“The reference design for the project includes a two-way off-road cycling path on the river side of Kingsford Smith Drive as well as a riverside pedestrian path,” the Lord Mayor said.

The upgrade to Kingsford Smith Drive between Theodore Street and Breakfast Creek Road will deliver:

Three through lanes in each direction;

  • Continuous footpaths on both sides of the road with improved footpath widths;
  • 1.8-metre wide on road cycle lanes between Theodore Street and Racecourse Road;
  • A two way off road cycle path on the river side of Kingsford Smith Drive between Racecourse Road and Breakfast Creek, and a riverside pedestrian path; and
  • Consolidation of bus stops allowing most stops to be indented out of traffic lanes.

Cr Quirk said the reference design would provide the design and construction contractor with a basis to develop the final design. The tender process for the design and construct contract is due to begin soon, with the contract expected to be awarded by the end of 2015.
